Some lovely writing there bern, nicely articulating a lot of what I admire about Alek. To a degree I think you’re on to something with his ‘bravery to be boring’, what I might call the bravery to be repetitive. I’m thinking especially of tracks like Timiquizqueh and Tlaloc, and I’d agree that Elish falls the wrong side of that balance, if you play it from start to finish. Starfall’s close, but for the reasons you describe I still prefer it to Aurinko.
Some of my favourite Nomic tracks are neither short nor freeform (one is the 10 minute Human Race chillout edit), which confirm he’d be pretty comfortable writing something longer. As Shekel said, his sets show that he has a good feel for structuring freeform over an hour or so. One compromise would be to hear more Nomic Live PAs…
I’ll try a top ten too – much like bern it’s a case of which Alek tracks to add first, and a few of these could easily be swapped out for others. Actually, let me cut a couple of Alek tracks to fit some other artists in…
No particular order, slightly off the top of my head:
Alek Szahala – Man Eaten
Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
Alek Szahala – Supriya
Alek Szahala – Vengeance 2007
Alek Szahala – Invitation
Betwixt & Between – Hollow
Betwixt & Between – Reincarnation
DJ Rx – Hellfire
Hase – Brionac
Pain on Creation – LushYou might like to start with Pearsall’s new set! Haven’t listened all the way through yet, but Pearsall’s jungle mixing is always top of the line. Much like those tracks I posted above it’s a real 93-94 mix of ragga and deeper stuff, from what I can tell, and must be outrageously good fun to mix.
Quoting Schopenhauer doesn’t make ‘lol’ an appropriate response, bern. Keep the criticism constructive and civil and we’ll have a better chance of getting some discussion going here.
I’d also be interested in knowing from one of you Japanese-literate fans what the conjugation of the verb in “お前の尻の穴に棒を刺してやる” and “お前の目玉に画鋲を刺してやる (反人間中心主義の詩)” is.
Re. that conjugation, verbしてやる or verbってやる is a less polite version (putting it mildly in this case) of ってあげる, which shows that someone is doing [verb] for someone else. It’d be something for a superior in the ってあげる version, but all that goes out the window here, of course.
Meant to reply here an age ago, but since then I’ve heard about all the new jungle that’s been appearing this year!
I agree with Sherkel that a few of Dyz’s original tunes are a bit too vocal-heavy and while there are some nice deep moments they mostly sound much more of the 1999-2000 proto-liquid kind of thing, to my ears. Check out some of these though, on a label called Rua Sound that’s pushing some lovely 94-esque stuff:
Some proper amen edits going on in that first track, and found another promising one that has just been released:
Definite Source Direct influence there! Haven’t had time to hunt more down yet, but just finding these made my day 🙂

Shimo’s right, I only ever use Traktor’s recorder too – Audacity would be my other choice, I think. However you end up recording it I’d love to hear a new Labraska set 🙂
Nice start, I had no idea about Xochitlán! There are plenty of other Alek tracks I’d be curious to know, Timiquizqueh, Ashurnishishi etc.
A resident Finn (or a decent dictionary) could give us a much bigger list, but a few easy ones that came to mind right away:
Alek Száhala – Lumi “Snow”
Alek Száhala – Aurinko “Sun”
Grimsoul – Painajainen “Nightmare”Stopping by, months after the fact, to say this thread (and Solvynt’s work especially) is pretty mind blowing! There can’t be many places outside TYFTH that would have managed this much info.
I can’t add much more right now, but I remember Alek mentioning that Vengeance’s ‘When my work is finished, I’m coming back for you’ is from Warcraft 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBViA9draOs
It’s so good to see the hoover tutorial again, thanks for digging it up 🙂 It’s funny, only yesterday I had the thought that I should see how much of the FINRG site is archived, but a quick look suggests that only the forum topics are viewable…there were some production threads there that I’d love to read again.
You’ll see the latest post on the main site soon enough (more coincidences, it was already in draft form before I saw this thread), but the ‘twisted’ tutorial is worth adding here too:

If you’ve heard any of Sherkel’s new tracks then you’ll know we have another aspiring producer who has well and truly nailed the Einhander leads. I wonder if he might be willing to offer some advice?
I’d be happy to add some ideas too, but I’m very much an amateur. If the thread stays this quiet I’ll add some thoughts when more time allows! The classic go-to was Alek’s hoover tutorial on his site, but I don’t think that’s available anywhere…
This place is very quiet, isn’t it? I was hoping everyone would have spotted this Sherkular Showcase by now, as you already know my thoughts. Time to do my bit with a post on the blog itself, perhaps…
Good call to give a shout here too Alex, believe it or not I was meaning to get a post up about Substanced’s track and the rest of the release. Some really interesting stuff going on in the Genre This! remix 🙂

Definitely – I was expecting things to work out that way, without any real guidelines and just dependent on which DJs take part.
There are so few NRG-only sets these days, it just occurred to me that a collab set of NRG-centric producers (a lineup comes to mind right away…) is worth thinking about for the future 🙂
Was just thinking out loud really, but that’d already give us a tidy lineup 🙂
I wouldn’t be able to do much with the idea until January, so let’s see how much interest there is til then. Goes without saying, but NRG’s just as welcome – actually if the mix series idea gets off the ground then an NRG-only set could be pretty amazing…
Humbled (again) by the kind words Sherkel, and a position as TYFTH PR Manager beckons after that CD 1 writeup 🙂
I hope others have enjoyed it as much, I definitely had the same feelings once the album was finally finished. It has sold (and is selling) well, but there’s a huge crowd still to reach – and that’s the plan, it’s too good to remain this niche.
As for the CD 2 mix, there were a lot of fun and (ahem) challenging factors there – I wanted to try the smoothest set I could possibly manage of oldies and new tracks, but one that could function as an intro for newcomers too. A tricky issue was licensing, as some of the tracks I fiddled around with during the planning stage simply weren’t available. That’s mainly what tilted the tracklist so much towards the Finnish side, but at least there’s still a good variety of labels represented, another of the goals when I started.
