I’ve got a lot of catching up to do when it comes to Freeformaniacs sets, but this new effort from Custom Built DJs caught my eye with its lively-looking tracklist. As expected, it’s a really nice hour of melodic freeform, with enough of a Finnish influence to ensure there’s a bit of an edge to things.

Nice to see the filter-tastic Gate Crasher in there, as well as less common choices like the tricky-to-mix Immaculate. It’s always great to hear Alek in a set, but this time the incredible atmosphere of Darkstar didn’t really match with the rest of the set, in my opinion – wonder if a more uplifting tune might have worked better to finish things off? Either way it’s a really enjoyable set, and definitely gets a recommend.

  1. Jon Doe – Warehouse (Cube::Hard remix)
  2. Epyx and Cyrez – Immaculate
  3. Grimsoul – Lightshaft
  4. Substanced – Wistful
  5. Furyan – Galaxias Glaciere
  6. Custom Built DJs – Get out of Here
  7. Eryk Orpheus – PVC (Lost Soul remix)
  8. Penguin Conspiracy – Mechanical Fables
  9. Ephexis – Sick Seduction
  10. Full Circle DJs – Gate Crasher
  11. Horzi – Infernal Psycho
  12. Alek Szahala – Darkstar

Now it’s Beezee’s turn to demonstrate the power of the Horse with his set for Pearsall’s Sonicrampage. From the moment this set kicks in there’s no mistaking the Beezee selection, with classic FINRG filters from beginning to end – not that I’m complaining. In between are trancier sounds with tunes like I’ll Bring the Storm, Nephila and Moment of Wonder (excellent use of I’ll Bring the Storm’s long intro, by the way), and even a bit of Lab 4 in the nastier, more experimental section towards the end.

Pearsall has even included a great interview with the man himself – we’ve mentioned this before, but it’s always nice to hear a DJ talk at length about his/her own mixing style, influences etc. Hopefully this and his recent Freeformaniacs sets will give Beez a bit more exposure and the chance of showing off his style in a few more mixes here and there.

1. Pain On Creation – Pain control
2. Grimsoul – I’ll Bring the Storm
3. DJ RX – Frozen Flame
4. Epilim – Plasma
5. Alek Szahala – Pink Magic
6. Substanced – Geneva pt 2
7. Furyan – Galaxias Glaciere
8. Grimsoul – Moment Of Wonder
9. Ephexis, RX, Carbon Based – Decimator
10. Ephexis – Elements
11. Endemic – Hurricane
12. Substanced – Shadows Of Tomorrow
13. Aryx – Nephila
14. Grimsoul – Bad Boy
15. Lab 4 – Uprising
16. Betwixt + Between – Phase 6
17 Epyx + Cyrez – Polar Energy
18. Substanced + Alchemist – Skullcrush

Thanks to Alderz for pointing me in the direction of his most recent set, excellently titled Heavy Hearted. It has to be one of his best mixes for quite a while, with a very nice selection of darker tunes and some inspired oldies. I really liked the use of Ziggurat from the halfway point – as nice a track as it is, the intro does drag on a bit, and this way the set starts off with plenty of energy.

Other good selections include Galaxias Glaciere (which I’ve been playing a lot in practice recently, too) and the amazing Entangled to finish things off. Plus points too for the Dragon Form Skullcrush mix, really rough and effective, that one. Many will have heard this set already, but if you haven’t the less common choices, quality mixing and general nastiness really make it a good one to check out.

One of the biggest developments since I’ve been away has been the start of another new label, Smiling Corpse. Following on from Watchtower, this is another new project that aims to support the darker, deeper side of freeform, but this time with free CD releases.

I’ve been lucky enough to hear a few of the upcoming tracks, as well as some work in progress stuff while I was in Finland, and it’s looking like SC is really hitting its stride right from the first release. Coaxing Twisted Freq/Kreatrix out of retirement is obviously a good start, but there’s also an amazing new Alchemiist track, Qygen’s wonderful Earth Shine and plenty more.

Thanks to the SC crew for including TYFTH is the links section – there’ll be more news here as the first album takes shape.

[111216] raq’s_mix_vol13 “Freeform_Universe” by raqhow

Many will have already checked this interesting set from raqhow, but for anyone who hasn’t it’s another nice example of limiting yourself to certain tracks and coming up with some good ways to connect everything together. Going for a spacey, universe theme, it works far better than you’d imagine, and there’s quite a nice consistent sound to the whole set. For my money, the excellent connection from Starfall to Ghost of Jupiter alone makes the set worth a listen – Starfall is notoriously hard to mix well, so kudos to raqhow for coming up with the best attempt I’ve heard so far.

1. Paocala – Sunfire
2. Odyssey, Obie & Macca – Black Hole
3. Nightforce & Substanced – Operation Stardust
4. Lostsoul – Darkside Of The Moon
5. Synthwulf – Full Moon Freeform
6. Endemic & Lostsoul – Voice Of The Eclipse
7. Aryx – Aurora
8. Paocala – Starfall
9. Twisted Freq Presents Nightforce – The Ghost Of Jupiter
10. Substanced – Freeform Mercury
11. Lostsoul feat. Dark Angel – Deep Space
12. Epyx & Cyrez vs Mary K – Nebula

I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time, but now there are links for just about all the tracks from the TYFTH SoundCloud that have reached the download limit. Hopefully the Rob.O.T.T tunes will be reupped before long, too. It’s a long and frustrating tale as to why that account is still on pause, but who knows, things might change early next year…

For the time being, be sure to grab any tunes you missed first time around!

PlasmaDancer – Munted! Monthly! Episode 1, 17th December 2011 by FINRG Recordings

It seems as though a few people have been good enough to check out this set already, which went online a day or so ago. I genuinely couldn’t have wished for a better reaction from the Krafty chatroom crew on the night, and since then there’s been some really nice feedback from those who missed it first time around. I’ve actually had a couple of questions in the past from Horsers who wanted to know how I construct my sets, so permit me if I may to talk a little a lot about the thinking behind this one.

[111113] raq’s mix11 “All_of_Kreatrix_Evilution “ by raqhow

Japanese scene regular raqhow is back again with another mix, this time a Kreatrix-only set full of real classics. I haven’t heard a few of these for a long, long time, but they all have that much-missed Kreatrix atmosphere. Once again, the mixing’s fine, and the opening connection between Unleashed and Deep Vibrations is one of the nicest I’ve heard for a while. raqhow’s definitely making progress with his sets, this is another that’s well worth a listen.

  1. Twisted Freq – Unleashed
  2. Anon – Deep Vibrations
  3. Twisted Freq – Dragon Form
  4. Nightforce – Estrogen (feat Twisted Freq)
  5. Horzi – Infernal Psycho
  6. Micken – The Channeler
  7. Substanced – Acid world (Twisted Freq’s party remix)
  8. Twisted Freq – Innocence

Another mix to enjoy today, this time from fellow Horser and Freeformaniacs crew member BEEZEE. We’d been warned to expect some darker tunes, and our man definitely doesn’t disappoint, with the kind of consistently nasty/twisted atmosphere that would cause chaos on dancefloors here. After BEEZEE’s excellent past mixes it’s no surprise that the mixing is really top class (that Moonshine>Godd connection is very special), and it’s also interesting to see the tracklist similarities between this and Dyzphazia’s Munted set (previous post). Congratulations to Amini for having Eupraxia played in both!

Once again then, another must listen – download the whole set (with the one like Stray on mic duty) via the Freeform Forum thread.

1. Digital Anarchy vs Skampy + Mayhem – Illusions of Sound (Horzi +Meke remix)
2. Epyx + Cyrez – Moonshine
3. Marco V – Godd (Tyranoid + Strongstream bootleg)
4. Substanced – Freeform Mercury
5. Alek Szahala – Adagio for Strings
6. Endemic + Solution – Outbreak (rx remix)
7. Substanced – Lost Temple II
8. Epyx + Cyrez – Andromeda
9. Twisted Freq – Dirtier World
10. Amini – Eupraxia
11. Epyx + Cyrez – Kanashibari
12. Rank 1 – Airwave (Betwixt + Between bootleg)

Lock Us Up – Forthcoming Electronica Exposed by Kreatrix

A bit slow off the mark this week, but something really worth mentioning is the new batch of releases from Electronica Exposed. Depending on sales, they might not even be the last we hear from the label, so anyone into Shanty’s brand of Finnish (and sometimes Japanese)-tinged UK Freeform should really show some support (and the sale on past releases is definitely worth checking out, too).

Another reason to support EE’s latest efforts is that Electronic Exclusives 20 – Til Death Us Do Part includes the newest vocal track from Kreatrix, Lock Us Up. More of a bouncy freeform tune than the recent (and awesome) Time, this is still a very nicely produced track that hovers between a few different styles.
