And so it begins 🙂
Although we’ve seen some familiar faces on the site over the years this is the first chance to get some proper communication going, and so what better way to start than with the classic self-introduction thread?
Tell us about yourself – and how did you end up here, of all places?
Easy answer for me of course – I’m PlasmaDancer, and started TYFTH in 2007 to better represent the pretty isolated corner of a subgenre of freeform I first discovered in Japan. The ‘About’ section might be updated one of these days and so I’ll spare the full chronology, but TYFTH achieving full label status in 2016 (just before its 10th birthday) is a very decent milestone. Hopefully it (and I) will be making some useful contributions to the scene for a good while yet.
I’ll embrace the ambiguous thread title and also ask about favourite track intros – unfinished or not, it doesn’t get much better than Alek’s Balag Lamara…

December 3, 2016 at 7:11 pm #1782Hi! I’m a dark freeform / NRG fan from the States. I learned to love music through happy hardcore in the late 90’s, but my tastes turned darker than my friends’ as I discovered gabber and freeform hardcore. When I stumbled onto Alek Szahala’s “Xochitlan” mix playing on DI.fm, I discovered the perfect style of music that I thought existed only in my head and nowhere else. As the FiNRG style lost momentum into the very late 00’s, I expanded into other dark music genres like industrial hardcore, dark drum & bass, goa trance and black metal. I still love this music however and believe there are many ways it can be expanded upon in years to come!
Incidentally, I too lived in Japan for a few years, and got my first freeform event experience at Codex in Tokyo. PlasmaDancer played an amazing set as could be expected, and I can still recall dancing around like an idiot to Freezing Clouds, a favorite of mine. That he’s a great guy to meet in person is probably no surprise to anyone that followed him for all the years he’s been active!
At any rate I’m looking forward to having a proper place to discuss the darker side of hardcore on the internet again 🙂
As for great intros, it’s hard to beat the sinister buildup of Alek’s Anmitzcuaca for me.
December 3, 2016 at 7:30 pm #1788Hello world!
My name is Solvynt and I’m from the USA. I’m a long time lurker here and a huge fan of the darker/emotional side of Freeform. I also occasionally do mixes.
I first got into this sound back in late 2008 or so after discovering some Betwixt & Between tracks (Disturbed Mind, 4321) on Excalibur Vol.1 and the Khaotic Dimension CD. Sometime after that I came across “Yamanote no Oto” and “NRG Monogatari 1&2” via this site while searching Google for more on BTW… which then exposed me to FINRG and the rest of the scene. So… thanks a lot for that. 🙂
Other genres I’m into are: Ambient, 170/Grey Area (atmospheric~techno-ish music written in 85-170BPM) and some trance.
As for the question in the OP, my favorite intro would have to be “Tigris” by Alek Száhala.
December 3, 2016 at 8:41 pm #1789hello! I am a freeform enthusiast from France.
I had my first exposition to the hardcore genre (more specifically JCore) around high school (2009ish) with netradios events and self-produced/indie/dojin music.
My first exposure to Freeform with BTW’s tracks on HARDCORE TANO*C, but back then I didn’t even know the genre existed. Then, I stumbled onto Munted Monthly. I had a little more interest in the genre, but not to the point I could appreciate it fully.
I must have learned about the existence of TYFTH around that time.It took some more streaming events and online sets until critical mass was reached and that I awakened to how much material
went under my nose, how prolific some artists and labels were (FINRG, Electronica Exposed). That was about 3-4 years ago.At some point, I jumped the gun and went to CODEX 5 in May 2015. That was a blast. I remember dancing, jumping up and down almost non stop for 3 entire
sets (Alek’s, Plasma and GULD) except for a few pictures and videos, that says a lot about how much I enjoyed the thing.
The interaction with other fans and the DJs…
That is where you discover that freeform anthems in a live club environment take on an emotional dimension (something like a mix of
nostalgia and melancholia), something hard to find and reproduce alone in a home environment.
That’s how my interest in freeform music got crystallized.Today, I feel pretty confident about how much I like freeform, although in my case, it is an acquired taste born of listening to the music
over and over again. There are things you can only “get” and “rediscover” through repetition, like most things in life :>
Even now, I managed to discover freeform tracks that would not have caught my interest even a few months back.I hope I managed to communicate my feeling and experience adequately and that fellow Horsers here can relate to the ramblings of a latecomer such as myself.
It is hard to decide on a favorite intro for me, I am divided between several Carbon Based tracks.
so I will go for 2 answers, Prologue and Charmed Dreams.December 3, 2016 at 10:22 pm #1790Hi friends here I am!
I’m SteTN from Italy. I was (and still) used to listen to Hardcore Gabber music, then one day around 2009 I saw on wikipedia a subgenre called J-Core and later I found Destiny681
channel and so Betwixt & Between, Raverrose, Alabaster and practically Hardcore Tano*C.
I don’t remember how I found TYFTH, probabily for information about Betwixt & Between label news. Even though i was impressed by Plasmadancer dj skills and how the site was constantly update, and so I discovered FiNRG label (with Alek Szà hala, Dj Proteus, Carbon Based, Pain on Creation etc.)If i have to choose an intro i will say: East of Eden

December 4, 2016 at 1:24 am #1792Hello! I’m Shimotsukei and I’m a hard nrg/freeform DJ from the US. I got my start into electronic music about 10 years ago with Betwixt&Between’s reincarnation. I can’t remember when exactly I found this site, but I’ve lurked here for many years now.
Over the last few years I’ve been putting on the online event Lucky Lotus and more recently releases through our label, trying to represent our sound however I can. This year was like a dream both being able to do a set together with PlasmaDancer for the festival and releasing a physical freeform only CD at Codex in Japan.
Favorite intro is a difficult choice however
Falling Star pt 3 and Eternalcannon are my current favorites.- This reply was modified 7 years, 11 months ago by shimotsukei.

Just remembered that a more recent intro choice might be Storm Coming. Also, familiar faces so far but thanks for the intros and welcome all!

December 4, 2016 at 10:18 pm #1799Short intro from me, anyone who’s been on the circuit for more than 18 months or so will probably know my name (for better or worse hahaha).
I retired from DJing in general about 18 months ago, but initially got into Freeform around 2006. The first track I heard was Carbon Based’s epic remix of Lush, closely followed by Dryad Machine ( a friend had found the two vinyl in the bargain bin at a Tidy Weekender). Life changing experience for me, originally coming from a Metal and Industrial/Aggro background, to freeform via stuff like Lab4 and Tinrib.
I initially found TYFTH after getting my first freeform club set in a club – I was looking for something new and innovative, as all I’d heard were the 4-5 decent nuenergy releases and FiNRG stuff. This lead me onto Betwixt, Alabaster, Suge, Lv4 and a whole host of awesome trance based Japanese hardcore/freeform.
In the years following, I tried to bring the Finnish and Japanese sounds to the mainstream in the UK, with arguably relative success, I started the Munted Monthly podcast in 2011 with DJ Midas, which was a huge success during its short run, ending in 2012.
I was also a founding member of Freeformaniacs and the community album Freefornatted Vol 1. Around the same sort of time in late 2012, I joined the Smiling Corpse team and assisted with their hugely successful first physical release
I’ve been onboard with many projects since, in 2014 I remodelled Freeformatted and made it my own, less community based, which enjoyed relative success and was the only freeform label to put out consistent monthly releases for any sustained period of time.
So that’s my freeform career (so to speak) in a nutshell 🙂
December 5, 2016 at 3:59 am #1801I said it was going to be a short one, but ended up being a small essay haha, sorry about that. I also forgot to include what I’m up to at the minute…
I still work with Smiling Corpse, I just recently worked on the Blue Revolver OST and remixes, I was the mastering engineer for the project as well as the sourcer of remixers 🙂
While freeform is no longer my main focus, I mostly produce at the moment. Liquid DnB and Progressive Breaks.
Here’s two examples of my work so far:
Some of you may recognise the original/Le Dos-On/JdKid mixes from a Freeformatted EP we did some time back
You may already be familiar with Blue Phoenix, or his freeform alias Erkenfresh. I really wanted to do a dnb interpretation of the epicly emotional original 🙂So thats me, 18 months ago to now
December 6, 2016 at 1:25 am #1808Looking at all these years listed, I’m probably the newest fellow here. Oh well, no big deal! Here’s another hello from US and A!
I was first introduced to freeform in 2012 when I came across a thread somewhere that acted as my initial exposure to electronic music. The OP included a list of album recommendations, at the very top of which was Betwixt & Between’s Nanosecond Eternity. One thing led to another, and for the past few years I’ve been neck-deep in freeform and NRG! With everyone else mentioning their other musical preferences and how they relate, I’ll mention that for as long as I’ve known about music my favorite “genre” has been VGM. It shouldn’t be hard to guess that I’ve taken quite a liking for the melodic variant of freeform that our favorite producers are known for. There’s something about combining steady beats, repetition, and filtered synths with captivating melodies that creates a miraculous combination in the right hands.
I’ve been writing music of my own since 2010 that’s achieved varying degrees of popularity (under a handful of less round names) and at last shifted my focus to freeform this year. My approach to production didn’t click as well with electronic music as I hoped it would, but looking at my most recent stuff I think it’s all paid off in the best way possible. If I find the right opportunity there’ll hopefully be a release or three coming to support this corner of the scene.
My favorite track intro? I’d have to go with I Believe Nothing.
December 10, 2016 at 7:02 pm #1823Hello!
Not sure how to do this but I just thought I’d mention a few important steps on my journey through music listening history that led me to where I am today in terms of music preference. Maybe someone will be able to relate to one or more of them. 🙂
So it stated out with the eurodance wave in the early 90:s. Our teacher let us bring CD:s and play a favourite track in class now and then. I believe I played some tracks by DJ BoBo and probably Ice MC from my “Partyzone” or “Absolute dance” VA CD collection.
In the mid 90:s my cousin got gifted a CD for christmas. It was something with that cover art that captured my interest: The Devil In Disguise. This was probably the first encounter I had with 160+ bpm music.
I guess I have always moved towards the darker and more melancholy sounds when exploring new genres of music and by the end of the 90:s I discovered two radio shows here in Sweden that catered to this. “P3 Mix” on SR (the equivalent to BBC Radio) and NRJ Extravadance both introduced me to trance music (and later on Hard House).
At around 2003 my facination with trance music started to fade and hardstyle and industrial hardcore became more and more interesting. Just when proper hardstyle suddenly got labeled “oldstyle” and was replaced with the dull “jumpstyle” sounds, I happened to stumble upon this mix series by an artist called DJ Rx. The Codex series of mixes opened up a whole new world to me. 160+ bpm, beautiful dark melodies without distorted kicks? The perfect blend! Then in came Alek Szahala and here we are. 🙂
Now, I don’t remember how I ended up on this blog but I have probably been lurking around for quite a few years by now. It has been, and will surely continue to be, the one place on the Internet that ties me to the world of NRG and Freeform music.
Right, sorry for the lengthy post. Cue favourite intro! There are so many brilliant tunes out there but this was one of the first to pop up in my head.

trading 1 opzione binariMay 6, 2018 at 12:53 am #3623For some reason my post is not showing up, so I’ll repost it:
After following this music so fanatically and enthusiastically for years, I had to take a break from it. That was the only way to properly understand the meaning of compositions like Afternoon Owl. I can in fact say I indulged this music to the point of disgust. That said, I still consider Alek Száhala nothing less than a musical genius. His music is incredibly logical and streamlined, and consequently incredibly powerful (and therefore also quite dangerous…). Of course he also made bad tracks, but when adhering to such an extreme style of music, the risk of producing comedy is very high. It is not easy to make adult and tasteful 180 BPM four-to-the-floor music, is what I’m saying, and this is why most tracks in this music style (the so-called “freeform”, which is in reality very well structured and not freeform at all…) are actually pretty bad. But by the same token, when they hit this style’s very narrow sweetspot, they can reach outright brilliance. I rank Száhala very high in the hierarchy of modern music (right at the top, along with Infected Mushroom). But I’ll stop typing at this point lest I run out of things to post on the forum.
May 12, 2018 at 6:39 am #3627Having dabbled in production for a good while now, I can confirm quite a lot of that. While I’m not fond of terms like “adult” and “tasteful”, the obligatory presence of beats/bass/breakdowns/etc. leaves very little room for content; thus to use that cramped remaining space for genuine creativity (especially combined with the expectation of short melodies) is a challenge that’s as both difficult as it is unique, and why the amount of producers that successfully do this instead of rewriting existing tracks has always been next to none. The success of the producers celebrated here in combining one-of-a-kind timbres with an aptitude for catchy yet powerful melodies to turn uptempo dance music into an art form can’t possibly be overstated. While Alek simply took those to an extreme degree while sticking with predictable structures, I find Betwixt’s ability to unapologetically inject his essence into his creations and allow structures and obligatory elements to only form within them at his mercy to be all the more impressive. All of the “big guys” have had at least one track where they managed this, but nowhere near as many as he did.
That’s just my opinion, of course. You’ve broached quite the interesting topic by mentioning the flaws of the genre (arguably danceable styles as a whole), and I’d love to hear what others here think about it.
