One of the other big releases recently was a lot less conventional than Ephemanent, showing what a good state the scene is in these days – at least in terms of new tracks being produced. Escape the Time is more on the freeform fringes, what with the very strong psy/hi-tech influences, but it’s definitely worth a TYFTH mention as one of the most diverse EPs there’s been for a while.
While the first two tracks are probably the furthest from freeform, I really enjoy the progression of Impending Flux and the goa-esque melodies that appear in the second half. This is one that really could find a good home in a darker, psychedelic set. Depths of Phantasmagoria starts as my favourite track on the EP, but slightly loses steam by heading in a less goa direction from the breakdown onwards. Following that is the excellent new version of Cinder Glade, then more quality Nirotiy, this time with a remix of Elk Cloner.
Although this might not be an EP you’ll have on repeat given how unusual most of the tracks are, there are some brilliant ideas in here and it deserves support. There’s a lot of mixing potential here too, so there’ll very likely be a future TYFTH set appearance for at least a couple of these.
Actually this one is very interesting to me, at least I will listen to it repeatedly. x)
“Depths of Phantasmagoria” ‘s chorus shows some melancholy atmosphere, maybe it is truly little inconsistent with the mysterious atmosphere in the previous part. But I’m okay with that
Haha good to hear, but it could be a big change of style for some people here!
I agree with you about the atmosphere, especially in the breakdown – even if I wish the track had continued the style of the first half.
Two or three month ago? I heard all tracks and know some production details about this, maybe I should share something you will be interested in.
This EP is actually part of his personal construction of the worldview that makes up, from a Japanese Yuri manga ‘まちカドまぞく’,this is why you can hear some anime vocal samples on ‘escape the time’ & ‘Elk Cloner’. Through this I think in the tr.1 he do his best, and just like you said,I love Impending Flux too (By the way have you heard the new Dustvoxx track superawesome? Another amazing Hitech I’ve heard recently, probably the best hitech I’ve ever heard this year)
when I heard Depths of Phantasmagoria, I guess that you will be not particularly interested in the part after breakdown, actually this melody is from a previous CN pop melody. He made some minor changes, thinks it’s a nice try and told me someone may need to take a long while to get used to the melody, so he made the rest of the song as long as possible.
(And something interesting is that he say it’s a hitech EP, not goa, so he don’t decide to close to the Goa Style, I think some goa elements you fell are probably from qygen’s track, I suggested some Qygen tunes to him.)
Interesting info about what inspired the EP, thanks! I haven’t heard the Dustvoxx track, will look it up asap, especially if it has some hitech freeform feeling like these.
Thanks for sharing that about Phantasmagoria too, I guessed that the melody might have been taken from somewhere else or strongly inspired by a soundtrack – I like the thinking behind the structure of the track in that case. And yes, although I realised the goa elements weren’t the focus I think they improve every track where they appear.
He’s still active?! Dropping Zone is such a classic to me… Anyway, the connection to that manga makes me want to get both that and the EP to see how they approached it. (As for what to expect from me, Leo, Virgo, and Hercules might give you a hint.)
Dustboxxxx change his name to Dustvoxx and he has become a member of Hi-tech Lovers these years, recently he release a new album, if you like his hitech style I think you can try to challenge his new album
