Substanced & Alchemiist – Skullcrush by FINRG Recordings
I recently heard that this tune was under construction, and the preview more than lives up to all expectations. Mixing Substanced’s production and melodies with Alchemiist’s nastiness, this tune has just about everything, including a ferocious DnB section that really adds a lot to the track. Then it’s back to the aggressive filters – what a great tune, and comfortably one of my favourites on the album so far.
Again, thanks for the support and kind words Jon. 🙂
Yeah, thanks Jon! 😉
Awesome track! Absolutely loved its ferociousness! It’s very well produced with some amazing sound design. That “dragged” sound at 0.22 and 2.03 is something I’ve wanted to see done in freeform for a while, I think it sounds so good.
However, I didn’t like the piano. Why does everyone use piano in their tracks nowadays? The breakdown sounded very dull for me. I honestly think these “piano-breakdowns” have been overused in this scene and, to me, Nomic has been the only the exception.
But hey, this isn’t really a fault in the track, just me not being too keen on these piano melodies anymore.
That all said, this one track is looking like it’s gonna be my fav. on the the album. I confess wasn’t expecting so much power when I clicked play!
Alchemiist / Substanced
Don’t mention it…absolutely quality track you’ve got here 🙂

I completely agree, actually. A so-so melody can sometimes be rescued by insane filtering / an interesting sound, but there’s nowhere to hide if you’re using a piano. Alchemiist’s The Dome is a nice recent tune that uses piano chords effectively, though.
As it happens, I deliberately tried to ‘tie together’ the Munted set with some piano tracks, but Betwixt and (especially) Nomic haven’t let me down with their melodies so far 🙂
What a tune?! That Neurofunk (d&b subgenre) section is absolutely brutal. I adore this tune…
I got given a clip ages ago when they first started and I was wondering where it was going… Sheer brutality in the making.
I can’t stress how perfect this tune is for me at the moment. As Janne already knows, I’m a huge Neurofunk fan, so this tune just represents everything I’m currently about, brutal freeform, tranceyness and Neurofunk.
In a word: SICK.
I totally agree that piano-breakdowns are overused, but it’s just a kind of an easy way to go, especially for me, I just looooove piano melodies and meddling with them. I tend to overuse them though.
And thanks all for the kind words! 😀
